May Update: Fossil Fuel Divestment a Win-Win-Win. So Why Hasn’t the Council Committed?
May Update on DC’s Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign
Wondering what we’ve been up to? Here’s an update on our work to get the District’s investments out of fossil fuels.
Earth to Council: It’s time to STEP UP!
In a unanimously passed resolution last December, the DC Council requested that the DC Retirement Board “explore all means possible for minimizing the District’s involvement with companies with the largest fossil fuel reserves.” Well, it’s four months later, and that request has been blatantly ignored. We recently testified at a DC Council Budget Oversight Hearing to underscore why continuing to invest in coal, oil, and gas is a colossal mistake—especially seeing as direct investments in the top 200 fossil fuel companies have depreciated dramatically in the past two years. Next steps? Stay tuned…
Speaking of the right thing to do…
The illustrious Dave Roberts, formerly of Grist, has used his new perch at Vox to make the moral case for divestment. We’ve been saying it all along: Using public money to bankroll some of the world dirtiest companies — literally and figuratively — as they try to extract and burn every last bit of planet-warming fossil fuels is just plain wrong. It’s even worse that that, because we know the poor will be hit first and worst by the impacts of climate change. Pope Francis knows what’s up — but does the DC Council?
Tommy Wells — No Longer on the Council, but Repping Divestment in the Bowser Administration
Remember Tommy Wells, former Ward 6 Councilmember and 2014 mayoral candidate? He was one of our earliest and strongest supporters — as well as an all-around environmental champ. Wells is now head of the District Department of the Environment, overseeing issues like energy efficiency and the Anacostia River cleanup. We spoke with him last week at a Sierra Club forum, where he told us to keep up the good work and said that Mayor Bowser would sign a fossil-fuel divestment bill.
As always, if you want to help with the effort to get DC to divest, please let us know. We can send you some stickers or buttons to give out, you can get your friends to sign the petition to divest DC, you can come to one of our Tuesday night organizing meetings, you can have a beer with us at one of our happy hours…the possibilities are endless. Don’t be shy, get in touch today!
